International Relations

The Doctoral School of Regional Sciences and Business Administration (RGDI) at Széchenyi István University has consistently regarded the deliberate development and ongoing strengthening of international relations as a key strategic priority. Academic performance is today unequivocally measured against international standards: research excellence, publication visibility, and embeddedness in professional networks acquire their true significance in a global context. Our Doctoral School therefore strives to ensure that our students, supervisors, and faculty members have full access to all opportunities that enhance their international presence and competitiveness.

International Conference Participation and Scholarly Visibility

We consider it a priority to encourage active participation in prestigious international scholarly conferences. The Doctoral School provides professional support and, to the extent of its capacity, financial assistance to this end. Our aim is for students to engage with international academic and professional networks from the early stages of their research, thereby making their findings visible, open to feedback, and applicable to broader scholarly discourse.

We particularly support:

  • presentations at peer-reviewed international conferences,
  • participation in international workshops and doctoral colloquia, and
  • membership in thematic research networks and professional associations.

Conference participation is not merely an opportunity for publication, but also one of the most important means of building professional networks.

Special Seminar and Visiting Scholar Programme

Our Special Seminar Series is designed to foster international academic exchange. Through this initiative, distinguished international professors and researchers share their expertise on current issues in regional science, economic geography, innovation studies, sustainable development, economic policy, and related fields.

The objectives of this programme are to:

  • present the latest international theoretical and methodological trends,
  • support publication strategies and international journal visibility, and
  • lay the groundwork for joint research projects and co-authored publications.

Guest lectures also provide our students with the opportunity to receive direct scholarly feedback on their dissertation research from internationally recognised experts.

Development of International Publication and Project Competencies

The Doctoral School places particular emphasis on ensuring that its students and faculty successfully engage in international research projects and funding applications.

We support:

  • participation in international research consortia,
  • the development of project planning and grant writing competencies, and
  • publication in high-prestige international journals.

Through methodological workshops, publication mentoring, and research planning consultations, we help our doctoral students become active participants in international scholarly discourse.

Student Mobility and International Research Collaboration

Student mobility programmes facilitate shorter or longer research stays abroad for our doctoral students. Our aim is to ensure that every student has a realistic and supported opportunity to undertake a period of international research, thereby enhancing the scholarly quality of their dissertation and strengthening their international integration.

In the future, we aim to further expand our mobility and collaboration opportunities through bilateral institutional agreements, joint supervision arrangements (co-supervision), and shared educational and research programmes. Our longer-term objectives also include the establishment of joint doctoral programmes and double degree collaborations.

Openness, Interdisciplinarity, and Societal Relevance

Our international strategy is not an end in itself: its aim is to ensure that research in regional and economic sciences provides answers that are meaningful in a global context, while remaining relevant to regional development, competitiveness, innovation, and sustainability challenges at the domestic and Central European level.

RGDI is building a doctoral community that is:

  • open to international scholarly dialogue,
  • capable of applying interdisciplinary approaches, and
  • able to communicate its findings in a form that is accessible not only to the academic community but also to policy and economic decision-makers.

We are firmly committed to the view that international embeddedness, high-quality scholarly work, and societal utility are mutually reinforcing factors. In this spirit, the Doctoral School of Regional Sciences and Business Administration seeks to further strengthen its position in the domestic and international academic landscape.
